You’ll find Italian, Jewish, Vietnamese, and Haitian spots, and, of course, meaty French-leaning restaurants too. Together this ragtag bunch helps make this city a standout place to eat. Spanning cuisines, neighborhoods, and price points, this guide is our shortlist of Montreal’s must-try spots, reflecting the new openings driving conversation, the trends playing out across dining tables, and the generational icons holding down their communities.
Updated, May 2024:
As spring steadily shifts into summer, Montreal increasingly feels on the cusp of something great. For restaurants, it signals a long-awaited wave of local produce, with sightings of fresh beets, rhubarb, white asparagus, and wild mushrooms about town. ’Tis also the season for park picnics and sun-dappled restaurant patios, two locales Montrealers seize at the first hint of good weather. This update brings a crop of new spots uniquely suited to the rise in temperature: Atwater Market (stalls with outdoor dining), Club Social PS (a charming terrace), Heni (a menu that reflects the best of the season), and Cheskie’s (because every picnic needs a sweet finale).
Eater updates this list quarterly to make sure it reflects the ever-changing Montreal dining scene.
